On-Page SEO Checklist for Wollongong Service Businesses

A practical on-page SEO checklist for Wollongong service businesses: page titles, headings, service and suburb pages, internal links, schema and speed.

On-page SEO is everything you control on your own website that helps Google understand what you do, where you do it, and why your page deserves to rank. For service businesses in Wollongong and the Illawarra (tradies, clinics, salons, consultants, cleaners and more), getting it right is often the fastest way to improve rankings without spending a cent on ads.

Use this checklist page by page. You don’t need to be technical for most of it.

1. One page for each main service

This is the most common gap we see. Many local business websites have one “Services” page listing everything. Google ranks pages, not websites, so a single page can’t rank well for “blocked drains”, “hot water systems” and “bathroom renovations” all at once.

Checklist:

  • Each main service has its own page
  • Each page focuses on one service and the searches people use for it
  • Pages are linked from your main menu or services page

2. Page titles that say what and where

Your page title (the blue link in Google results) is one of the strongest on-page signals. Keep it clear and specific.

Good: “Emergency Plumber Wollongong | 24/7 Blocked Drains” Weak: “Home | Smith & Co”

Checklist:

  • Every page has a unique title
  • The main service and location appear near the start
  • Titles are around 60 characters or fewer, so they don’t get cut off
  • Your business name is at the end, if there’s room

3. Meta descriptions that earn the click

The meta description is the short text under your title in Google. It doesn’t directly change rankings, but a good one gets more people to click.

Checklist:

  • Every important page has a unique description of around 150–160 characters
  • It says what you offer, where, and why choose you
  • It ends with a reason to click, like “Free quotes” or “Book online”

4. One clear H1 heading per page

The H1 is the main heading on the page. Google uses it to understand the topic, and visitors use it to check they’re in the right place.

Checklist:

  • Each page has exactly one H1
  • The H1 includes the main service and, where natural, the location
  • Subheadings (H2, H3) break the page into clear sections, like “Our process”, “Prices” and “FAQs”

5. Content that answers real customer questions

Thin pages with two sentences rarely rank. Neither do pages stuffed with keywords. The pages that rank best answer the questions customers actually ask before they call.

Checklist:

  • What’s included in the service, in plain English
  • Who it’s for, and which suburbs you cover
  • Your process, step by step
  • Price guide or what affects the price, if you can share it
  • FAQs based on questions customers really ask you
  • Real photos of your work and your team
  • Reviews or testimonials from real customers
  • No text copied from other websites or from your own other pages

6. Suburb and area pages done properly

If you serve several areas, such as Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Dapto, area pages can help you rank in each one. But copy-and-paste pages with only the suburb name changed are low-value doorway pages, and Google can ignore or demote them.

Checklist:

  • Only create area pages for places you genuinely serve
  • Each one has useful local content: jobs you’ve done there, local considerations, travel times, nearby suburbs
  • Each one links to your relevant service pages

Internal links help Google find your pages and understand how they relate. They also help visitors find the next thing they need.

Checklist:

  • Service pages link to related services (“Need a new hot water system? See our hot water page”)
  • Blog posts link to the relevant service page
  • Link text describes the page it points to, rather than “click here”
  • No broken links to pages that no longer exist

8. Your business details on every page

Checklist:

  • Business name, phone and address (or service area) in the footer of every page
  • Details match your Google Business Profile exactly
  • A click-to-call phone number at the top of the page on mobile

9. Schema markup

Schema markup is code that tells Google key facts about your business and pages in a structured way. It doesn’t show on the page, but it helps Google read your details accurately.

Checklist:

  • LocalBusiness (or a more specific type) schema with your name, address, phone, hours and service area
  • FAQ schema on pages with real FAQs
  • Breadcrumb schema
  • Test it with Google’s Rich Results Test

10. Images that help, not hurt

Checklist:

  • Images compressed so they don’t slow the page down
  • File names that describe the image (for example deck-build-figtree.jpg, not IMG_4032.jpg)
  • Alt text that describes the image for people using screen readers
  • Real photos rather than only stock images

11. Speed and mobile

Most local searches happen on phones, often on mobile data. A slow site loses visitors before they even see your offer.

Checklist:

  • Pages load quickly on mobile (test with Google PageSpeed Insights)
  • Text is readable without zooming
  • Buttons are easy to tap
  • No pop-ups that cover the page on mobile
  • Nothing spills off the side of the screen

12. Clean, readable URLs

Checklist:

  • Short URLs that describe the page, like /blocked-drains-wollongong/
  • No random numbers or long strings
  • If you change a URL, redirect the old one to the new one (a 301 redirect), so you don’t lose rankings

13. Indexing basics

Checklist:

  • Your site is connected to Google Search Console
  • An XML sitemap is submitted
  • Important pages aren’t blocked by robots.txt or “noindex” tags
  • Only one version of your site loads (for example, www redirects to non-www, or the other way around)

Where to start if this feels like a lot

Start with your most valuable service: the job that makes you the most money. Give it its own page, a clear title and H1, useful content, FAQs and real photos. Then repeat for your next service. One great page beats ten thin ones.

Also make sure your Google Business Profile is in good shape. On-page SEO and Maps rankings work together, which we cover in how to rank in the Google Maps pack in the Illawarra.
